Nintendo 3DS is a handheld game console produced by Nintendo which is a successor of Nintendo DS. Its most prominent feature is the ability to display stereoscopic 3D effects without the use of 3D glasses or additional accessories, plus it also offers new features such as the StreetPass and SpotPass tag modes, which allows owners to download and play those games which were originally released on older video game systems. 

Sometimes there might be a need to factory reset Nintendo 3DS. Nintendo 3ds factory resets are useful, especially when you want to refresh your system.

Steps to Factory Reset Nintendo 3DS

Below, we will discuss the steps for how to factory reset your Nintendo 3DS.

  • You need to make sure that your handheld is connected to Wi-Fi.

Please Note: If your Nintendo Network ID is connected to your 3DS, then you will first need to make sure that the device is connected to the internet before you can factory reset it so that the NNID can be unlinked from the 3DS. While if you don’t have an NNID signed into your 3DS, you won’t have to worry about connecting your device to the internet. 

Your device will automatically connect to the internet when you try to factory reset 3DS, but it can also be done manually by going into the ‘Settings menu’ and then choose the ‘Internet Settings’ option.

  • Once you make sure that your device is connected to Wi-Fi, it’s time to factory reset it. First, you need to go to the ‘Settings menu’ –  the wrench icon on the bottom of the home screen. 
  • From there, you need to tap on the ‘Other Settings’ option. 
  • Next you need to scroll over to the last screen and choose the ‘Format System Memory’ option.
  • Then it will ask if you are ready to connect to the internet after which you simply need to tap on the ‘OK’ option.
  • It will take a few seconds to connect and then a pop up with a warning will appear to let you know that all the data will be deleted. If you are ready to move forward, you will need to tap on the ‘Next’ option. 
  • The next screen displayed on your screen will inform you that the Nintendo Network ID will be unlinked from this device after which you will need to tap on the ‘Next’ option. 
  • The final screen will inform you that if you want to link your NNID to a new 3DS system, you will need to perform a system transfer first. When you are ready to format the system, just tap on the ‘Format’ option.

Factory Reset Nintendo 3DS Without Pin

You will need to reset your pin with the help of your secret question. In case you have forgotten the secret question’s answer too, here is what you need to follow: 

  • You will need to navigate to the ‘Settings’ menu and tap on the ‘Parental Controls’ menu.
  • Now you need to click on the ‘Forgot Pin’ option.
  • You will now notice that your system will prompt you to provide an answer to your security question. Since you have forgotten that, you will need to click on the ‘I Forgot’ option again.
  • Now you need to wait while the system generates a ten-digit ‘Inquiry Number’.

Please Note: Once the system generates the inquiry number, it will appear at the bottom of your screen. You need to note down this number along with your system date. Generally, customer support uses this number to generate a master key for you.

  • Now you need to go back to where you left off on your Nintendo and click on the ‘Ok’ option.
  • After that, you need to input the master key you have generated or received. 
  • Finally, you will be prompted to reset a secret question and your pin.

How to Reset Your Nintendo 3DS XL

In case you use a Nintendo 3DS XL, you will need to follow the below-mentioned steps: 

  • At first, you will need to press and hold the ‘Power Button’ until the system resets.
  • Once the system is shut down, you will need to press the ‘Power Button’ once again to turn it back on.

Please Note: This entire process might take about 2 to 10 minutes depending on your system’s information. So wait patiently until your system restarts finally. 

  • After that, you need to tap on the ‘System Settings’.
  • Now you need to navigate to the ‘Other Settings’ option.
  • Next, you need to scroll to the right and locate the ‘Format System Memory’ option.
  • Now you will need to enter your pin. 
  • After this, you will be prompted to connect to the internet.
  • You will observe that your system will warn you about all data and information that will be lost. You will just have to continue by clicking on the ‘Next’ option until your system requests you to confirm the ‘Format request’. 
  • At last, you will need to click on the ‘Accept’ option to finish the entire procedure.
