Check your PS4’s remaining storage capacity

First things first, you will want to know exactly how much space is left on your PS4 console. To do so, you need to head over to your PS4’s Settings menu and then click on “System Storage Management”. From this window, you can view how much space remains on your system’s hard drive. This also shows the breakdown of the applications, save data and other media that are taking up the most space. After you enter one of the memory categories it will provide you with a more detailed analysis of the most space-hungry games on your system.

How to free up space on PS4?

Here are some techniques to free up space on PS4

Technique 1: Delete games and applications on PS4

Games are likely consuming most of the storage space on your PlayStation 4, so to free up storage on your gaming system, you would want to start by deleting games.

If you want to see exactly how much space each of the game is taking up, move to the Settings, then click on System Storage Management and select Applications. If you wish to delete one or more games, press on the “Options” button on your controller and then select “Delete”. Now choose the games you want to delete and then select the “Delete” button.

Now when you delete a particular game, the game save data isn’t deleted. You can now reinstall the game in the future and resume from where you left it off.

However, If you wish to play a game again, you will be required to reinstall it. We strongly recommend uninstalling games you own on disc rather than digital games. The games you have on the disc will be installed from the disc when you insert them, although they might have to download gigabytes of patches after a certain time. It is simple to redownload digital games you own for free. But they are going to take much longer to download and not to mention they will also drain your Internet service provider’s bandwidth cap more if you own one.

Technique 2: Delete the game data and file

As mentioned the above-mentioned technique will not delete the saved game data and setting in case you want to reinstall the game whenever you like. And those files are usually given a little attention to and thus taking up much PS space. This is the reason why some gamers find their PS has only a few games but it claims that there is no space. In this case, you can follow steps to see how to delete those game data.

Note: If you wish to reinstall those deleted games any day, you can also back up these files and data beforehand.

Step 1: You need to navigate to “Settings in the main interface, then click on Application Saved Data Management” and then select Saved Data in System Storage”.

Step 2. Select the option “Delete” when the Saved Data in System Storage windows is opened.

Step 3. Now Click on “OK” to confirm the deleting operation.

Technique 3: Clean Up Screenshots and Recorded Videos

You might take screenshots and record videos so that you can upload them on your social media account. These screenshots and videos that you record are stored on your PS4’s internal storage. Due to which less space s available for newer games. You can free up space on ps4 by managing them. To see your screenshots and recorded videos, move to Settings, open System Storage Management and then select Capture Gallery.

If you want to delete all screenshots and recorded videos associated with a specific game, select a particular game icon here, then press the “Options” button on the controller, and then choose “Delete”. There’s also an option of “Copy to USB Storage” available here that will copy the screenshots and videos to a USB storage device before you delete them.

You can also select a game and manage the screenshots and videos individually if you like.

Game themes are also one of the reasons for full storage. You can also view how much space these installed game themes take upon the System Storage Management screen. To manage installed themes, move to Settings, then open System Storage Management and then navigate to Themes. Then, you can remove any themes you don’t use. However, there is always an option to download them again later.

Technique 4: Upgrade hard drive to a bigger disk

In the end, if the storage space of your PS4 is not still enough, you can consider upgrading a hard drive to a bigger disk. You can also replace PS4 hard drive with an SSD. Sony equips PS4 with a 500GB hard drive that might be not so enough space for a hardcore gamer like you, and you can purchase a hard drive with 1TB or 2TB for your Playstation 4 and clone all the games to the new hard drive.

As mentioned, you can for downloading games onto an external drive. However, this will require a special formatting process.

To do this, you will need to open Settings, then go to Devices, then select USB Storage Devices, and choose the drive you want to format. The option that you should be looking for is “Format as extended storage”. Once you have done this, you can download PS4 games and apps onto the external drive. Though you won’t be to use it for screenshot storage or other media. You can always go for re-formatting the drive via Windows or PS4, though, so don’t panic.
