Well, this process changed a little with iTunes 12.7. The tones library you could actually sync with your iPhone which has been removed, you can manually then add ringtone to iPhone.

Step one: Get iTunes

Now you almost never have to use iTunes with a modern iPhone, but you can by yourself own custom ringtones that still require it.

If you are someone who never used iTunes with a modern iPhone, now by adding your own customized ringtones which are still required.

On a Windows PC, you’ll need to install the latest version of iTunes from Apple if you want to install one. On a Mac, iTunes is already installed and is good to go. This process can work on both that is Windows and Mac. Henceforth, you can add a ringtone to your iPhone.

Step two: Choose a sound file

Of course, you’ll need a sound clip you want to convert and use as a ringtone for this. You probably already have some idea of what you want to use. if not, go ahead and find something you like. You can use absolutely any sound file you find.

You must be having an idea of what you would need to use. If you ain’t sure about this then you can convert and use that ringtone for the following.

You should make sure that your file should be a maximum of 40 seconds long and iTunes will then refuse to copy your ringtones.

In case your file is too long and you just want to use one part of it, you can then cut it down to just the part you want to it using an audio editor. Well, you can use any audio editor you think does the work. We personally like  Audacity audio editor which is open-source and is free but it is a little complex to use so if you want to use a simple tool available online like mp3cut.net.

Well to use this website you can, tap on Open file and then browse to the MP3 or any other sound file you want to edit. This tool can also extract the sound from video files only if you upload any of these.

Now you can select the part of the audio file you want to use for yourself and tap the “Cut” button.

Now you can download the edited clip to your PC. This is the file you’ll need to import into iTunes.

Step three: Convert the MP3 to AAC

There’s a good chance your sound file is in MP3 format. You’ll need to convert it to AAC format to use it as a ringtone. (If your sound file is already in AAC format or has a .m4r extension, you can skip this part.)

Mostly there is a great probability that your sound file would be in MP3 format. You will have to then convert it to AAC format so that you can use it as a ringtone.

First of all, you have to add a sound file to your iTunes and then locate it in your library. You can do this by dragging and dropping the file directly into the iTunes library. You can locate it in Library > Songs > for the file afterwards.

You can select the sound file in iTunes and then tap File > Convert > Create AAC Version.

Step four: Rename your AAC file

Well, you will end up with two copies of the same song file which is in your iTunes library. That is the MP3 version and the new AAC version.

If you want to keep track then you can right-click the heading in the library and then enable the kind column.

You will then see a new Kind of column that will tell you about the file. The original MP3 is the MPEG audio file, while the AAC audio file is your new AAC file. You can then right-click the MPEG audio file version and then remove it from your library if you would like.

First, you have to drag and drop the AAC file from the iTunes library to your Desktop or any other folder on your system.

You’ll then get the ringtone file as an AAC file with the .m4a file extension. Change the file extension to .m4r. Let’s say, if the file is named Song.m4a, change it to Song.m4r

Step five: Add the ringtone file to your phone

Finally, you can connect your iPhone to your PC or Mac with its included USB-to-Lightning cable well that’s the same cable you use to charge your iPhone.

First Unlock your iPhone and tap the “Trust” option on its screen to confirm you want to trust your device if you haven’t previously connected your phone to iTunes on that PC or Mac. You’ll have to then enter your PIN.

In iTunes, you can click the device icon that appears to the left of “Library” on the navigation bar.

Finally, you can then tap on the Tones section which is under On My Device in the left sidebar.
