What is the Reddit Throwaway account?

As the word ‘Throwaway’ suggests something being used temporarily and then thrown or disposed of. The Reddit throwaway account can be used by the user for a purpose and then abandoned if required. It is an account created other than your main Reddit account.

The main purposes for which this kind of accounts are used by the users are:

  • To share some personal feelings or embarrassing stories anonymously such that people cannot reach up to their main account or relate it to them. This is where an experience can be shared in ‘Ask Reddit’ for the one facing it currently as support.
  • Give your financial opinions. As discussing finance is an extremely tricky and sensitive topic, you can use this account that maintains privacy.
  • To share your views that cannot be done in real as disclosing your identity might create issues.

For example, you can share your personal opinion about work culture or the issues you face from a common person’s identity to your higher officials.

  • To share sensitive comments and not wanting to leave any trail of identity.
  • Reddit allows the users to downvote a comment if they don’t like it or disagree with it. So, some use these accounts so that if downvoted then no one can associate the particular comment to their main account.
  • The Reddit account has lots of information that can easily expose a user and ease the process of identification. Hence for those who want to stay hidden in the Reddit world, this account is the best choice as you can share thoughts but still stay unknown.

For example: If you want to share your personal experience in the Reddit Asks section as a help to the other user but do not want people close to you to know about it as it might be awkward, you can create a Reddit throwaway account and express yourselves.

Hence, we can conclude that the throwaway accounts are the account created apart from your main account in a portal or platform. You can create similar throwaway accounts in other handles such as gaming platforms, social media platforms, etc.
