WhatsApp Notifications

The WhatsApp application notifies its users whenever a new message or a call is received. This feature is extremely useful as the notification would appear on your screen even if you are working on some other application, hence this reduces the chance of missing any messages, even by mistake.

These alerts are even displayed on the desktop screen in which you would have logged in by scanning and linking your phone to the PC by using the WhatsApp Web feature.

The notifications are usually expressed using the typical sound of WhatsApp and a preview would flash over the application or locked screen of your device with options to either close it or view the message. If you choose to view the message, then you would be directed to the WhatsApp application and the particular chat or conversation would be opened.

Hence the WhatsApp notifications ensure that none of the conversations is left unnoticed by the users. However, sometimes there might be quite disturbing as there are situations where sudden popping of message preview would hinder your current work. So, there are several ways to manage notifications in WhatsApp and control these notifications, their alerts.

How To Manage WhatsApp Notifications?

Now that we know the uses of WhatsApp notifications and the reasons for which they must be customized according to the user’s interests, let us check out how managing them could be done easily. There are three specific characteristics of these notifications that can be altered are:

  • The notification sound settings.
  • Desktop alerts while using the Web application.
  • Preview notification alerts.
  • Manage your WhatsApp call alerts.

In some devices, the user can customize the notification light if the feature is supported on the smartphone. So, let us begin with the basic options that the WhatsApp application provides the users, that is, to either customize the notifications or mute the notifications. The mute option is useful especially if you do not want unwanted or low-prioritized chats to simply pop up on your screen.

Customize The Notifications

Through this method, the user can control and change various default notification settings such as change the settings such that conversation tones for incoming and outgoing messages or chats can be turned on or completely shut off. This customization can be achieved by changing the notification tone or ringtone or setting it to vibration. The vibration duration can also be set according to the preference of the user.

To customize notifications, first, open the WhatsApp application on your smartphone or PC and open a particular group or individual chat whose notification settings need to be altered. Now choose the Custom notifications option to customize accordingly, by clicking or pressing on the group or person’s name on the top.

Open WhatsApp > Go to an individual conversation or group chat > Tap or click on the name of the individual contact or group > Go to the Custom notifications settings > Choose the Use custom notifications option. Further, the user can reset all the changes or alterations made to their notifications settings by just a single step instead of reversing all the changes manually by these steps:

  • Open the WhatsApp application and click on the three vertical dots icon on the top right corner. The icon can also be found on the WhatsApp Web application used for PCs.
  • Now go to the Settings option.
  • Click on the Notifications option followed by More options.
  • Choose the Reset option from the Reset notification settings tab.

Once the Reset option is used, all the changes or customizations would be set as per the default settings of WhatsApp.

Mute The Notifications

This is another useful feature that can be found in this application, which allows its users to mute the notifications of certain individuals or groups for a specific time. That is until the contact is muted, any message from that person or group would not be notified and can be viewed only if the user searches for it.

Muting the notifications helps to prevent the mess or clutter that multiple messages cause especially when all different conversations from different sources pop up simultaneously. Even if you do not want to be disturbed for a specific duration of time, the contact can be temporarily muted. Follow these steps to mute a particular group or contact:

First, open the WhatsApp application and go to the conversation which has to be muted. Then click on the three vertical dots icon on the top corner of the screen. Choose the Mute notifications option from the drop-down menu. This will further display a list of the time specifications or the duration for which the contact’s notification would be muted. This temporary muting duration ranges from 8 hours to 1 week whereas there is an ‘Always’ option that can be used to keep the contact permanently muted!

Stop Popping Up Of Messages

If the only issue that you have about notifications is unwanted appearing or display of messages on the screen when the application is not in use, then you can simply stop the notifications from appearing by unchecking the ‘Show notifications’ option.

In this article, we have covered all the different tricks and ways to manage WhatsApp notifications efficiently. Hope this was useful for you to keep up privacy and updates of the WhatsApp application in balance.
