Explaining the multi-channel audio features and workings in detail

Different kinds of speaker setups exist in the sound systems which are expressed in terms of two digits that are separated by a decimal or a small dot. These numbers express the number of audio tracks that are used in the particular multi-channel home theatre system. Now while some of the channels only consist of a single audio system installed in them, other audio systems consist of two audio channels. These are called monophonic sound (single channel) and stereophonic sound (two channels).

What are 2.0, 2.1, 5.1, 6.1, 7.1 channel systems?

As we talked about the single-channel and stereophonic sound, you must be wondering about the different numbers that you see on the multi-channel theatres. So, the audio tracks are classified into the following numbers:

  • 2.0
  • 2.1
  • 5.1
  • 6.1
  • 7.1 and many more

The first number (before the decimal) shows the number of satellite units i.e. the primary channels that are on a single speaker which are responsible for handling the frequency range that ranges from somewhere around (100Hz to 22KHz). The next number that is preceded by a decimal which is a decimal digit is for controlling the LFE i.e. Low-Frequency effect. LFE is another name for what you call a subwoofer.
