Subtitles are usually shown at the bottom of the screen so that the users who don’t understand the primary languages can see the subtitles and understand the content. With the help of these subtitles, you can watch any regional movies or series and understand what’s happening in it. Not only this, subtitles are even useful for people who have difficulty in hearing to understand what’s happening in a movie or a series or any video content.

Types Of Subtitle

Sometimes you might want to remove subtitles from MKV and other multimedia files. Maybe because you understand the primary language and the subtitles are now disturbing you while watching the content. But, before we head towards how to remove subtitles from MKV file, you need to know the types of subtitles, so that you can remove them easily. Subtitles are usually of two kinds: Hardcoded subtitles and Softcoded subtitles.

Hardcoded Subtitles: Hardcoded subtitles are the ones that are already embedded in the videos and they cannot be removed or changed altogether. These subtitles are a part of the video images that is impossible to get rid of.

Softcoded Subtitles: the soft subtitles are the ones that are not embedded in the videos and have to be added by the user if they need to use subtitles. This can be done by overlaying subtitles to the available video. These subtitles are independent streams and can be turned on and off according to the user’s wish.

How To Remove Subtitles From MKV Video File?

You can easily remove subtitles from MKV file from your video player if it is a softcoded subtitle. However, a hardcoded subtitle cannot be removed like this. Moreover, if you want to remove a hard-coded subtitle then you will have to make use of third-party software to do so. Sometimes, you can even use this third-party software for removing the soft subtitles as well. There is various software available to remove subtitles from MKV video files and other formats.

Removing Subtitles from MKVToolNix

MKVToolNix is a software of free tools to create, alter, and inspect MKV video files. Just follow the steps given below to remove the subtitles from MKV files.

  1. Open the MKVToolNix application.
  2. Now, click on the “+ Add Source Files” button located at the bottom of the page.
  3. After you click on it, a small “Add Media Files” panel will appear on the screen.
  4. Now, go to the .mkv video file from which you want to remove the subtitles and select the video file.
  5. Click on the “Open” button.
  6. In the “Tracks, Chapters, and Tags” section, uncheck the subtitles checkboxes (SubRip/SRT).
  7. After this, you will see the “Destination File” section located at the bottom. From there, you can view and change the location on your system where MKVToolNix will save the new MKV video file. If you wish you can even change the default location where your video file will be saved. By clicking on the “folder” button that is located next to the “Destination File” you can save the video file wherever you want on your PC.
  8. When you are ready, click on the “Start Multiplexing” button located at the bottom.

Now, MKVToolNix will create a new MKV video file, but it will remove subtitles from MKV video file. However, this process is fast because it doesn’t convert the video. It only creates a new video file without the subtitles.
